A Nepali youth has died in a tragic fire in Camberwell, Melbourne's eastern suburb. The police are yet to reveal his identity, however, it is learnt that he was on a student visa and a resident of Sitapaila, Kathmandu. About 20 firefighters were called to a house on Kingsley Street, Camberwell, just after 12:30am. Two other people managed to escape the house uninjured.
Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) Commander Brian Whittaker said, "Firefighters arrived on scene to find that the fire was issuing from the windows of the house. Upon entering the house, they were very quick to extinguish the fire and contain it to the one bedroom of the house". He also remarked that the smoke detectors were not working and reminded the importance of it.
NRN Australia's Vice President Keshav Kandel has said communication has been initiated with the victim's family. "We are struck very hard with the news, especially with the festive season going on", he said. Nepalese Association of Victoria (NAV) has issued a public notice regarding the incident.
