An alleged child sex offender who was being searched for by the Police has been shot dead in Maroubra after he attempted to stab a senior police detective to death. The incident happened on Australia Day at 3:15 p.m. in Maroubra Junction Hotel's beer garden.
Nick Newman, 33, was at the hotel when three officers reached the site to arrest him. The situation escalated when the offender yielded a knife and stabbed the 45 year old detective sergeant in the chest and the abdomen. The other two officers immediately withdrew their firearm and shot dead Newman. The detective was rushed to the St. Vincent's hospital where his situation remains critical.
"It was a relatively routine situation they were in today and unfortunately that has escalated and ended in this very serious outcome," Assistant Commissioner Mark Walton told reporters in Maroubra on Friday.
Police on Thursday said they were searching for Newman who was known to frequent the Sydney CBD, Redfern and the Nepean area.
He was scheduled to appear at Penrith Local Court on January 24.
